Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially opened the Grand Mosque of Algiers on Sunday. This mosque, also called Djamaa El-Djazair locally, is now the third largest mosque globally and the biggest in Africa, with space for 120,000 worshippers.
Even though people began praying there in October 2020, Tebboune couldn’t attend back then because he had Covid-19.
The mosque is famous for having the tallest minaret in the world, reaching 267 meters high. It has elevators and an observation deck for visitors to enjoy the view.
Some people criticize the mosque, saying it was a personal project of the former leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika. They argue that it took too much time to build, over seven years, and cost more than $800 million.
