Justice Aminuddin Khan has officially taken oath as the first Chief Justice of the newly formed Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). This marks an important moment in Pakistan’s judicial history, as the country begins a new chapter in resolving constitutional disputes more efficiently.
The FCC was created under the 27th Constitutional Amendment to deal with major constitutional issues that often require urgent and clear decisions. These matters include disagreements between the federal and provincial governments, as well as issues that arise between provinces.
By setting up a dedicated court, the government aims to reduce the burden on existing courts and ensure faster rulings on matters linked to the Constitution.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad. President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, senior judges, military leaders, parliamentarians, and other dignitaries. Their presence highlighted the significance of the moment and the national importance of the new court.
After taking oath, Justice Aminuddin Khan expressed his commitment to improving the delivery of justice and maintaining the supremacy of the Constitution. He emphasized the need for transparency, fairness, and timely decisions to strengthen public trust in the judicial system.
Under the new structure, FCC judges will serve until the age of 68. However, the Chief Justice of the FCC will serve for a fixed term of three years. This system aims to bring stability while allowing regular leadership transitions.
One of the most important features of the FCC is that its decisions will be binding on all courts in Pakistan, including the Supreme Court. This gives the new court strong authority and ensures consistency in constitutional rulings across the country.
