An Indian University Bought A 2.5 Lakh Chinese Robot Named It ‘Orion’, And Called It Their Own Innovation Worth ₹350 Crore

Galgotias University has come under criticism after presenting a robotic dog named “Orion” at a recent AI Summit Expo and describing it as its own high-value innovation.

The controversy began when visitors and online users claimed that the robot closely matched the Unitree Go2, a commercially available robot developed by Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics.

Reports suggest that the Unitree Go2 can be purchased for around ₹2.5 lakh, depending on the model and features. However, the university presentation allegedly described the showcased system as an advanced AI project worth ₹350 crore.

This large difference in claimed value led to strong criticism on social media, with users questioning whether the robot was truly developed in house or simply rebranded.

Following the backlash, the university was reportedly asked to vacate its stall at the expo. Event organizers have not released detailed public statements, but the issue quickly gained attention across tech forums and news platforms.

In response, Galgotias University rejected the allegations and described the criticism as a propaganda campaign. The institution stated that it remains committed to artificial intelligence and robotics research and that its innovation efforts should not be undermined.

The incident has sparked debate about transparency in academic research displays, especially at large technology events.

Experts say universities must clearly explain whether they are showcasing original prototypes, modified systems, or commercially sourced hardware integrated with their own software solutions.
