Anwaar ul Haq Kakkar to Become First Pakistani Caretaker PM to Address UNGA

The temporary Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, is on a five-day trip to the United States to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This visit is significant because Kakar is the first caretaker PM in Pakistan’s history to speak at the main UN body where important decisions are made.

According to Pakistan’s constitution, a neutral caretaker government is in charge of national elections, which should happen within 90 days of dissolving the lower house of parliament. However, in this case, the elections may be postponed until March because the election regulator needs time to create new voting areas based on the latest population count.

No previous caretaker prime minister from Pakistan has ever spoken at the UNGA. This year’s UNGA session is planned from September 19 to 26, and Kakar is scheduled to address the session on September 22.
