Apple to Pay Almost $310 Million for Patent Infringement Associated with DRM

According to a Bloomberg report, a federal jury in Texas has ordered Apple to pay $308.5 million to Personalized Media Communications (PMC) for infringing on a patent related to digital rights management (DRM).

Late Friday, the jury ordered Apple to pay PMC a running royalty, which is dependent on the volume of sales of a good or service.

Apple has filed an appeal against the decision.

In 2015, PMC, a licensing company, filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the tech giant had infringed on seven of its patents. FairPlay, a DRM technology used by Apple to encrypt and decrypt digital content and applications such as books, audio books, TV shows, movies, and music, is the focus of the complaint.

Apple successfully contested PMC’s case at the US Patent and Trademark Office, but an appeals court overturned the ruling in March of last year, paving the way for the trial.
