Apple is preparing to enter the foldable phone market with its first-ever foldable iPhone, expected to launch in the fall of 2026. According to insider reports, the upcoming device is one of Apple’s most ambitious projects, combining the features of an iPhone and an iPad into a single device.
The foldable iPhone will follow a book-style design, similar to what other brands like Samsung have already introduced. On the outside, users will find a smaller display measuring about 5–6 inches, making it work just like a normal iPhone. Once opened, the phone will reveal a much larger 8-inch display, designed for watching videos, multitasking, and using apps side by side.
Camera Setup
Apple plans to include four cameras on the device:
- A front camera for quick selfies and video use when the phone is closed
- Two rear cameras, including a wide and either ultra-wide or telephoto lens
- An inside camera on the foldable display for video calls and selfies
This setup will allow the phone to function well both as a smartphone and as a tablet-style device.
Touch ID Returns
Unlike recent iPhones that rely only on Face ID, this foldable model is expected to bring back Touch ID. Instead of the TrueDepth system, which is too bulky for the slim foldable design, Apple will place a fingerprint sensor on the side button for unlocking and security.
Inside Technology and Features
The foldable iPhone will be powered by Apple’s upcoming C2 modem, offering faster connectivity than the current C1 chip. Just like recent models, it will support eSIM only, with no slot for physical SIM cards.
Colours, Design and Pricing
Reports suggest that the first foldable iPhone will be available in just two colours black and white keeping the design simple for its debut. At 9.5mm thickness when closed, it will be one of Apple’s thinnest devices.
Pricing has not been confirmed, but given the cost of other foldable phones starting around $1,800, Apple’s foldable is expected to be even more expensive and positioned at the top of its lineup.
What’s Next for iPhone?
The foldable iPhone is just the beginning of major design changes. Apple is also working on an all-glass design for its Pro lineup in 2027, marking one of the boldest shifts in iPhone history. In the meantime, the iPhone 17 series is expected in 2025, with a new thin “iPhone 17 Air” model and an updated rectangular camera design on the back.
Apple’s foldable iPhone represents a huge step into a new category of devices, blending smartphone convenience with tablet functionality. If all goes to plan, the fall of 2026 could mark one of the most exciting moments in iPhone history.
