Australian cricketer Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following Australia’s exit from the Champions Trophy 2025.
Smith, who won two World Cups with Australia, played 170 ODIs and scored 5,800 runs, including 12 centuries. He stated that it was the right time for new players to step in and prepare for the 2027 World Cup. While stepping away from ODIs, he remains committed to Test and T20I cricket, focusing on the World Test Championship and upcoming series.
Cricket Australia and the national selectors have fully supported Smith’s decision, acknowledging his remarkable contribution to the ODI format. His leadership and consistency have played a crucial role in Australia’s success over the years.
Reflecting on his career, Smith shared his gratitude for the journey, the memorable moments, and the teammates he played alongside. “It has been a great ride,” he said, appreciating the experiences and support he received throughout his ODI career.
Even though he will no longer play ODIs, Smith will continue to be a key player in Test and T20I cricket, ensuring his presence in Australian cricket remains strong. His decision marks the end of an era in ODIs but opens doors for emerging talent to carry the team forward.
