The Balochistan Assembly has approved an important new law to stop child marriages in the province. This bill aims to protect minors and ensure that no one under the age of 18 is forced or allowed to enter a marriage.
The government has taken this step after growing concerns about the safety, rights, and wellbeing of children, especially young girls who are often pushed into early marriages.
According to the new law, any person who tries to marry someone below 18 will face strict punishment. The penalty includes 2 to 3 years in jail and a fine ranging from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 200,000.
The bill does not only punish the individuals involved in such marriages, but also anyone who helps, arranges, or encourages the process. This includes family members, community elders, and other individuals who support the act in any way. They will also face legal action and similar penalties.
To make the law more effective, the bill sets clear responsibilities for nikah registrars and union council secretaries. Before registering any marriage, they must check and verify the CNICs of both people to confirm that they are legally old enough to marry.
If they fail to do this or show carelessness, they too can face fines and imprisonment. This accountability adds another layer of protection for minors.
The passage of this bill marks a strong step forward in safeguarding children’s rights in Balochistan. It sends a clear message that child marriage is a serious crime and will not be tolerated. The law aims to ensure a safer, healthier, and more secure future for all children in the province.
