Ban on Renting Homes to Bachelors Ruled Unlawful in Islamabad

The Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment has ruled that banning bachelors or single people from renting homes in Islamabad is illegal and unconstitutional.

Ombudsperson Fauzia Waqar made it clear that landlords cannot refuse housing to someone based on their marital status or gender. She said such practices go against the basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The decision came after a complaint filed by a woman who was denied a rental home because she was single.

She also reported that she was allegedly harassed when her utility services were disconnected to pressure her into leaving. After reviewing the case, the Ombudsperson found that these actions were unfair, discriminatory, and against the law.

In her ruling, Fauzia Waqar emphasized that every citizen has the right to equality, dignity, and freedom of residence.

She stated that personal choices, such as being unmarried, cannot be used as a reason to deny someone a place to live. The Constitution protects individuals from discrimination, and housing is a basic right that must be respected.

The Ombudsperson also shared her observations with relevant federal and provincial authorities, asking them to take notice of such practices and ensure they are stopped. She highlighted the need for awareness and strict action to prevent harassment and discrimination in the housing sector.

The complainant’s case has now been resolved, providing her relief and setting an important example. This ruling is seen as a strong step toward protecting the rights of single individuals and promoting fairness, equality, and respect for all residents in Islamabad.
