In spite of claims of the incumbent government that were to give four newly build hospitals to Islamabad, none of new public health facility could have been built in the federal capital in 2020 that has intensified burden of the patients at the two main government hospitals of this city.
Some years ago, the federal mediator also made some recommendations to build four new more hospitals in Islamabad while including the expansion for the Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital and popularly that is known as Polyclinic, along with an upgrading of three dozen dispensaries with it to meet the needs of people around like the city’s population that is of over two million and expected to be more than that.
Polyclinic and the Pims were unable to handle this load of teeming population. These two hospitals at present have to bear a burden of much-swelled population of overall city with an additional load of around 100,000 patients that come to seek the medical facilities from the cities like Jhelum and Murree besides the other areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the report from officials of two government hospitals, at least the three million people visit OPD- Outpatient Department of the Polyclinic and more than 36 dispensaries every year that are with free of cost consultation.
Also the 30,000 to 40,000 people are annually admitted to the hospital. Similarly, two million or more patients annually visit OPD of Pims and more than around 78,000 patients admits every year there for free healthcare.
In past year 2020 more than 28,670 patients as per report underwent different operations and surgeries, blood tests of various types for more than 3.3 million people were conducted free of cost and on highly subsidized rates also.
However, during the year 2020, a center was set up in the city, Islamabad to deal with the coronavirus patients during pandemic conditions. Due to OPDs closure in the government hospitals for months amid the pandemic situation, where the people bore the brunt. So, news hospitals are soon going to establish in the city,
