At least one person has died and six others, including children, were injured in separate kite-flying incidents as Basant celebrations began in the city, according to rescue officials. The incidents occurred on the first day of the festival, raising concerns about safety during the celebrations.
Rescue sources said the person who lost his life was 25-year-old Ali Rasheed. He reportedly died due to electrocution while trying to retrieve a kite that had become stuck.
The other injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals, where some were treated for cuts and minor injuries caused by kite strings and falls. Rescue officials confirmed that all incidents happened at different locations.
The Basant festival resumed after the Punjab government lifted a ban on kite flying that had been in place for more than 20 years. While many residents welcomed the return of the cultural event, the incidents have highlighted the risks linked with unsafe kite-flying practices.
Authorities said that strict safety measures are being enforced across the city. These include a ban on hazardous and metal-coated kite strings, which are considered extremely dangerous. Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert, and ambulances are on standby to respond quickly to any accidents.
A large number of police officers have also been deployed to monitor the situation and ensure that safety rules are followed. Officials have urged citizens to celebrate responsibly, avoid dangerous strings, and keep children away from unsafe rooftops.
Authorities stressed that public cooperation is essential to prevent further accidents and ensure that the Basant festival remains safe for everyone.
