Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, recently declared the release of 155 prisoners across the province, granting them a three-month reduction in their sentences. Addressing women inmates at Kot Lakhpat Jail during an Iftar event, she credited the collaboration with philanthropists and a Diyat payment of Rs150 million for enabling their release.
Additionally, she unveiled plans to implement video call services in all Punjab jails soon. Reflecting on her own stint in jail, she shared the challenges she encountered, including the struggle of staying in touch with her family. Despite the difficulties, she stressed the importance of remaining patient and resilient during tough times.
Maryam Nawaz acknowledged that while some prisoners might be guilty, others might find themselves incarcerated due to circumstances or flaws in the justice system. She expressed a firm commitment to enhancing conditions for prisoners, ensuring better food and essential amenities, and offering opportunities for skill training to facilitate their reintegration into society.
