ECARX to Launch 7nm Auto Chip with Arm China

According to the chief executive of ECARX, an auto tech startup backed by Geely’s chairman and Baidu, expects to supply goods with 7 nanometer (nm) chips as early as next year through its joint venture with Arm China.

ECARX, which was founded in 2016 by Shen Ziyu, CEO of ECARX, and Li Shufu, the Chairman of Geely, is focused on car chips, high-definition maps, and smart vehicles.

In an interview with Reuters, Shen, a former GM executive, said that ECARX’s joint venture with Arm China, Siengine, will begin supplying the latest chip products by the end of next year or early in 2023. The chips will be made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, according to Shen.

ECARX customers include Lotus, Lynk & Co, Polestar, Smart, and Volvo, all of which are owned or affiliated with the Geely company. ECARX is also in negotiations with other automakers, according to Shen.

Smart car technologies need chips with a 7nm process technology because they have a higher processing capability. Qualcomm Inc. is another company operating on 7nm or more advanced chips.
