SpaceX has made its Starlink satellite internet service free in Iran during recent protests and a five-day nationwide internet shutdown. The move was aimed at helping people stay connected after authorities blocked regular internet services across the country.
According to reports, SpaceX allowed Iranians to access Starlink without paying subscription fees, as long as they have the required satellite receivers.
This has given many people an alternative way to communicate, share information, and access news during the blackout. Starlink works through satellites and does not rely on local internet networks, making it harder for authorities to completely shut down access.
This is not the first time Starlink has offered free internet during crises. Activists estimate that more than 50,000 Starlink receivers are currently being used inside Iran. Many of these devices were brought into the country through informal channels. Despite this, Iranian authorities have reportedly tried to block Starlink signals and seize satellite equipment to stop people from using the service.
Even with these challenges, many users continue to rely on Starlink to stay connected with the outside world. The service has helped people communicate with family members, access social media, and share updates during a difficult period.
