Pakistan’s federal government is reviewing a series of new measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption as concerns grow over potential oil supply disruptions linked to rising tensions in the Middle East. Authorities are exploring different strategies to manage energy use more efficiently and limit the pressure on the country’s fuel reserves. One of the proposals under consideration is the introduction of vehicle speed limits across highways and major roads, as maintaining moderate speeds can significantly lower fuel consumption and help conserve energy nationwide.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik highlighted the importance of adopting lifestyle changes and promoting energy conservation across all sectors. He stated that consultations with provincial governments have already been completed, and several practical steps are being evaluated. Among the measures being discussed are the implementation of work-from-home policies and the expansion of online learning for educational institutions, similar to the arrangements used during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to reduce daily commuting and overall fuel usage.
The urgency of these potential measures is underscored by the sharp rise in fuel prices across the country. Petrol is currently priced at Rs321.17 per litre, while high-speed diesel has reached Rs335.86 per litre. The government believes that introducing conservation policies and encouraging responsible energy consumption could help stabilize demand and ease economic pressure during this challenging period.
