The PTA representative verified that internet connections had been restored across the country, but no directives had been received yet to reinstate social media networks.
Internet access and social media sites like YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook were both outlawed by the government due to political agitation in the country. Because of the suspension, the country suffered a huge economic loss—an almost 50% drop in point of sale transactions routed through the country’s principal digital payment systems a day after Imran Khan’s detention.
The IT and telecom sectors also suffered huge losses in the previous three days.
After Imran Khan’s arrest was declared illegal by the Supreme Court, the decision to restore the internet connection was made.
Despite this decision, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah stated earlier today that it would remain halted until those involved in violence and property damage during recent rallies were detained.
Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to remove internet restrictions.Rimmel Mohydin commented that there is an urgent need to settle down the situation in Pakistan as it is a violation of human rights and threatens more fatalities.
