Finland to Close Its Embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Myanmar

Finland has announced that it plans to close its embassy in Islamabad later this summer, with operations continuing until an official final date is confirmed. The embassy had only recently resumed activity in 2022 after remaining closed for nearly a decade, making this decision a notable shift in the country’s diplomatic presence in Pakistan. Officials have cited broader strategic and operational considerations as the primary reasons behind the closure.

Even before this announcement, the embassy was functioning with limited consular capacity, as many services such as visa processing and passport-related matters were being managed through other Finnish diplomatic missions, particularly in Abu Dhabi. Finland’s decision is part of a wider restructuring of its global diplomatic network, which also includes the planned closure of its embassies in Afghanistan and Myanmar. This move comes in the wake of Sweden’s earlier decision to shut down its embassy in Pakistan, highlighting a broader trend of Nordic countries reassessing their diplomatic engagement and priorities in the region.
