Islamabad is on track to become Pakistan’s first city to offer free Wi-Fi access to the public, with 30 hotspots planned to be operational by December 2025, according to officials from the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC). The initiative, aimed at expanding public internet access, was recently discussed during a briefing to the National Assembly’s IT Committee.
Officials stated that the free Wi-Fi project aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen digital infrastructure across the country. The hotspots are planned to be installed at key public locations, including markets, government buildings, and other high-traffic areas, ensuring that citizens, students, and visitors have easy access to high-speed internet.
The NTC emphasized that this initiative builds on its existing services, which currently provide internet connectivity and cybersecurity support to over 3,000 public and private institutions across more than 100 cities nationwide. The new free Wi-Fi system will not only increase connectivity for residents but also aim to transform Islamabad into a technology-friendly city that supports education, business, and digital innovation.
According to the officials, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will provide full technical support to NTC for the successful implementation of the project. NTC will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the Wi-Fi network to ensure smooth and secure services for all users.
Experts say the move could serve as a model for other cities in Pakistan, highlighting the importance of accessible internet in fostering economic growth, education, and technological development.
With the rollout expected by December 2025, Islamabad residents can soon enjoy seamless internet access at public spaces, marking a significant step toward making the city a digital hub in Pakistan.
