Free and Paid Internet Calling Apps that Residents Can Use Legally in UAE

Expatriates make up around 90% of the UAE’s population, and they rely heavily on internet calling apps to connect with loved ones in their home countries. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology enables them to make voice and video calls over the internet, using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access free calling apps. However, misuse of VPNs can result in hefty fines and imprisonment under UAE’s Decree Law No (34) of 2021. To cater to residents’ needs, telecom providers Etisalat and du offer internet calling plans, and there are various free and paid calling apps available.

  1. Microsoft Teams: Similar to Google Meet, Microsoft Teams experienced increased popularity, especially for video conferencing in businesses. It offers free unlimited group meetings for up to 60 minutes, with affordable paid packages.
  2. GoChat Messenger: Etisalat introduced GoChat Messenger, a free voice and video calling app, that allows users worldwide to connect by simply registering with their mobile number. Additionally, it offers services like money remittance, bill payments, gaming, and food ordering. GoChat also provides two packages at Dh50 and Dh99 for international calls without using mobile data.
  3. Zoom: Zoom remains one of the world’s most popular audio and video calling apps, catering to both individuals and businesses in the UAE.
  4. Voico: Etisalat’s Voico app promises crystal-clear audio and video connectivity. It enables sharing photos, videos, GIFs, animated stickers, and provides chat translation in over 100 languages.
  5. Google Meet: Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Google Meet witnessed a surge in demand. The app, available for desktop, iOS, and Android, is free to download and widely used by individuals and businesses in the UAE.
  6. Botim: Botim is another popular app that supports audio and video calls, along with sharing photos, videos, voice messages, locations, and more. Users can have group chats with up to 500 participants.
  7. Skype for Business: UAE businesses can utilize Skype for audio and video calls with their customers, available for free on all platforms.

Internet calling apps have become indispensable for UAE residents, especially expatriates, to stay connected with their loved ones. With various free and paid options available, people can choose apps that suit their communication needs and ensure seamless connectivity despite geographical distances.
