Free Electric bikes to Students; Here are the Details!

In a major step towards promoting academic excellence and clean energy, the federal government of Pakistan has announced the distribution of free electric bikes to high-achieving students across all educational boards, including the Federal Board. The initiative was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a high-level meeting held on Friday to discuss the nationwide promotion of electric vehicles (EVs).

The prime minister emphasized that the scheme is not only a reward for students’ hard work but also part of a broader strategy to promote environmentally friendly, cost-effective modes of transportation. “This move supports our dual goals of recognizing academic talent and pushing the country towards a greener future,” the premier stated.

A Push for Clean Transport & Youth Empowerment

Under the initiative, over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders will be distributed across Pakistan on easy and accessible terms. While top-performing students will receive the bikes free of cost, other segments—especially economically disadvantaged individuals—will be prioritized for subsidized electric rickshaws and loaders. These measures are expected to boost employment opportunities and reduce dependency on imported fuels.

A comprehensive action plan is also being developed to ensure electric vehicles are made available at affordable rates through subsidized loans, making the transition to clean transport accessible for a wider population.

Gender Inclusion & Provincial Representation

In a significant move towards inclusivity, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed that 25% of the total quota under the EV scheme be reserved for women. He also emphasized fair provincial representation, instructing that allocations be made according to population ratios, with Balochistan’s share increased to 10% to ensure equitable development.

Supporting the EV Ecosystem

The government is not only focused on distribution but also on developing a complete ecosystem for electric vehicles. As part of this strategy, four new battery manufacturing companies are set to begin operations in Pakistan. This development is expected to stimulate the local EV industry and create new job opportunities.

Ensuring Transparency & Safety

To maintain transparency and accountability, the prime minister ordered third-party validation of the distribution process. He also stressed that all electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders must comply with strict safety and quality standards.

Moreover, a nationwide public awareness campaign will be launched to inform citizens about the scheme, its benefits, and how to apply.

The meeting was attended by key federal ministers including Ahad Khan Cheema and Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to the PM Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior officials from various departments.

This forward-looking initiative signals the government’s commitment to combining education, innovation, and environmental responsibility for a better and cleaner future for Pakistan.
