Gilgit-Baltistan Shepherd to be Honored with Rs. 10,000 Reward for Saving 200 Lives in Glacier Flood

In Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district, a shepherd named Wasiat Khan has been praised as a hero for saving almost 200 lives during a sudden glacier burst in Tali Das.

When he noticed the glacier starting to break apart, Khan wasted no time. He rushed to nearby villages and warned families about the danger. Acting quickly, the residents moved to safer, higher ground before the floodwaters rushed in.

The glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) destroyed several houses and submerged multiple villages. Fields, livestock, and infrastructure were badly damaged. Yet, no lives were lost, a miracle credited to Khan’s alertness and courage.

Recognizing his bravery, the district administration has announced a cash reward of Rs10,000 along with a certificate of appreciation.

Locals say no amount can match his heroic act, but the recognition highlights the importance of his role in saving the valley. Community members have expressed deep gratitude, calling him a true guardian who risked his own safety for others.

Meanwhile, rescue and relief efforts are still underway. Landslides triggered by the flood have blocked the Gilgit–Shandur Road, and authorities are working to restore access. Rising water levels remain a concern for nearby settlements.

This incident also reflects the increasing risk of climate change in Pakistan’s northern areas, where glaciers are melting faster than ever. While homes and land were lost to the disaster, the fact that no lives were taken is seen as extraordinary, all thanks to the bravery of a humble shepherd who chose to act when it mattered most.
