Government Announces Complete Ban on ‘Completely Built Units’ Car Imports

The vehicles that are being Imported and are completely built units (CBU) are being restricted by the authorities.

Only Industrial Automobiles will be provided the permission to import, Expensive or the commercial vehicles will not be allowed to come inside the country anymore.

This prohibition will be effective for the cars that have been registered already, and will be shipped later in the month of May 19, 2022.

If the manufacturers of the vehicles decline to work with the authorities, restrictions might be imposed on the import many spare parts. The Ministry of Industries and Engineering Development Board was also being asked to convince and tell the manufacturers to lower down the imports of CKD (Completely Knocked Down) and Semi Knocked Down (SKD) cars at meeting of senior functionaries, on Wednesday, which was conducted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

On the other side, The authorities are not willing to contemplate a restriction, on the import of CKD and SKD cars and would be looking for the collaboration of the industry in lowering down the imports for the next coming months because of the stability of payment problem.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will now have to agree to the ban contemplation (IMF). Meanwhile the meeting, the administration has been given an approval to contact the IMF review mission on the restriction, and then ask for a permission from the federal cabinet for changing the Import Policy.
