Government Decides to Remove Ban on Import of Mobile Phones

As the Daily Jang reported on Monday, the Federal government of Pakistan is set to lift the ban on the import of mobile phones.

The sources have informed us that this notification might be issued in the coming week.

On May 19th, 2022, the Ministry of Commerce banned the import of 38 items, which included mobile phones, in order to get control of the high import bills and thought this might support the local currency. SRO 598 is used to amend the import policy.

But, the tax worth millions of rupees is generated annually from mobile phones, which is beneficial for Pakistan, hence the Ministry for Industries and Production and Cabinet Secretariat suggested lifting the import ban on cell phones.

According to stats, 940,000 mobile phones were imported in 2022 till May, as well as over 10.2 million mobile phones were imported in the year 2021 in Pakistan.
