Govt to Give Fuel Subsidy to Bikers and Rickshaw Drivers After Price Increase

Pakistan’s government has announced a plan to provide a Rs23 billion subsidy on petrol to help low-income citizens cope with rising fuel costs. The initiative is mainly aimed at motorcycle and rickshaw drivers, who are among the most affected by the recent surge in fuel prices.

The subsidy will be offered to beneficiaries registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), following a model similar to the financial assistance provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials said the move is meant to provide immediate relief to millions of ordinary citizens struggling with higher transportation costs.

Government sources explained that global oil prices have sharply increased due to tensions in the Middle East, with diesel prices reaching around $189 per barrel and petrol close to $130 per barrel. These higher international rates have put pressure on domestic fuel prices, prompting the need for government support.

Pakistan’s current oil reserves are limited, leading authorities to explore additional options, including the possibility of importing crude oil from Russia to meet demand and stabilize local supply.

Officials estimate that the subsidy will benefit nearly 30 million users of two- and three-wheeled vehicles, helping them manage rising expenses and maintain mobility. The program is expected to ease financial pressure on daily commuters and small business operators who rely on motorcycles and rickshaws for their livelihoods.

The government is finalizing details on how the subsidy will be distributed to ensure that the support reaches the intended recipients quickly and efficiently. The plan reflects ongoing efforts to protect low-income citizens from the effects of global fuel price increases while maintaining energy supply in the country.
