Govt to Provide Internet Hotspots at These Locations in Islamabad

The federal government has announced plans to install free internet hotspots at specific public locations in Islamabad, bringing better digital access to commuters and citizens in busy areas.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunications, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, confirmed that the initiative will focus on installing free Wi-Fi services at selected locations such as metro stations within this year. While the idea of providing Wi-Fi across the entire city has been discussed, the minister clarified that offering citywide free internet isn’t currently possible due to commercial concerns of telecom providers.

The decision came during a Senate IT committee meeting where various digital infrastructure issues were discussed. The committee had earlier suggested free internet on metro buses as well, but the ministry has not committed to that yet.

Meanwhile, the government is continuing work on improving internet access through fiberization at important places, including Parliament House, Parliament Lodges, hospitals, schools and universities. This is part of a broader goal to improve the quality and speed of internet services in essential sectors.

The session also touched on other topics, including Pakistan’s AI progress and administrative matters within the IT ministry. An ongoing debate about a high-level appointment sparked questions about transparency in hiring, but the minister defended the process.

Although discussions on crypto regulation were delayed due to key absences, the committee has called for further meetings with financial authorities.

As of now, citizens can expect free Wi-Fi in selected high-traffic areas especially at metro stations before the end of the year, making digital access a little easier for everyone.
