Govt to Put Limits on How Much Petrol a Private Car Owner Can Buy

The federal government is planning to introduce a nationwide digital fuel management system that will put limits on how much petrol private car owners can buy. Under the new policy, every citizen will get a fixed monthly fuel quota linked to their vehicle and CNIC. No one will be allowed to purchase petrol beyond the assigned limit.

The system will work through a dedicated mobile application developed by the Pakistan Digital Authority. Users will register their vehicle, generate a digital voucher for the allowed quota, and petrol pumps will scan or validate it before dispensing fuel. This will stop over-purchasing and ensure fair distribution of subsidised or controlled fuel.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has already completed testing of the devices and applications. The National Information Technology Board has verified the system for security and smooth working. Final approval is now pending with the Cabinet Division.

Once approved, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will oversee its implementation through all oil marketing companies and petrol pumps across Pakistan.

The move comes amid rising global oil prices and increasing fuel consumption. The government aims to control unnecessary buying, reduce subsidy leakage, and promote careful use of petrol. Details about the exact quota limit per vehicle have not been announced yet.

Officials say the digital system will bring transparency and help manage the country’s fuel demand more effectively. The plan is expected to be rolled out soon after cabinet approval.
