The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is planning to introduce 10,000 electric rickshaws in Peshawar to offer affordable and environmentally friendly public transport for residents. The project aims to modernise the city’s transport system while reducing pollution and travel costs for daily commuters.
Government officials have held discussions on rolling out the project in phases. These discussions covered financial support for drivers, technical planning, and the overall framework needed to successfully launch and manage the initiative. Authorities also highlighted the environmental benefits of electric vehicles, especially their role in improving air quality in the city.
The electric rickshaws will use smart battery technology and will be digitally registered. Monitoring systems will be put in place to ensure transparency, efficiency, and proper use of the vehicles. These measures are expected to help prevent misuse and ensure smooth operations.
The new e-rickshaws will be linked with Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to improve last-mile connectivity. This will make it easier for passengers to travel between BRT stations and their final destinations, improving overall urban mobility.
In addition to improving transport, the project is expected to create new job opportunities, support green energy use, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative aligns with the Chief Minister’s vision for sustainable development and reflects the KP government’s commitment to cleaner, smarter, and more efficient transport solutions.
