Ever wondered why there is a hole on the top of pen caps? There is a whole scientific reason behind this special manufacturing to save a person’s life.
Many people think that the purpose of the hole is to control air pressure or prevent the ink from drying out. Although the lid helps with that, the exact role of designing the caps with a hole was to prevent the accidental ingestion of caps.
Most people have the habit of chewing the pen caps and in doing so, they accidentally swallow the cap and it gets stuck in the airpipe leading to the death of the person. According to the reports, around 100 people in the US died each year from asphyxiation after swallowing ballpoint caps.
Therefore, the manufacturing companies came up with the idea of perforating the caps and minimizing the problem. All the other ballpoint manufacturing companies adopted the idea later.
