To help meet climate targets, Honda announced on Friday that by 2040, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles would account for 100 percent of all sales.
Toshihiro Mibe, the automaker’s newly named CEO, described the target as “difficult,” but added that the company wanted to “aim big.”
Honda has stated that it hopes to sell 40 percent hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles in major markets by 2030, and 80 percent by 2035, before reaching 100 percent globally by 2040.
The announcement comes a day after Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that Japan will seek to reduce emissions by 46 percent by 2030, which is substantially higher than the previous promise.
The current target replaces a previous aim of reducing emissions by 26% from 2013 levels by 2030.
