The highly anticipated ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 4 to June 30 next year, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. This will be the ninth edition of the tournament and will be held across the Caribbean and the United States of America.
The tournament will be played at 10 different venues, with the USA hosting a global cricket tournament for the first time. Initially, there were doubts about hosting the competition in the USA, but those concerns have been resolved.
Recently, an ICC team inspected potential venues in the USA, including Lauderhill in Florida, Morrisville, Dallas, and New York. Lauderhill has previously hosted international T20 matches, and the USA is currently hosting the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) competition. However, the venues in Dallas, Morrisville, and New York are yet to receive international status.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will feature a record number of teams, with a total of 20 participating. Ireland, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea have recently qualified through regional qualifiers, joining the twelve teams that had already qualified – West Indies, USA, Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
The tournament format will be different from previous editions. The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 round, where they will be divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each Super 8 group will then proceed to the semifinals.
