India has officially granted a license to Elon Musk’s Starlink, bringing the company one step closer to offering high-speed satellite internet across the country—especially in remote and rural areas where traditional internet services are limited or unavailable.
The news was confirmed by India’s Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, after his meeting with Starlink’s Chief Operating Officer, Gwynne Shotwell. She called the move a promising start, highlighting Starlink’s commitment to supporting India’s digital growth.
Starlink’s arrival in India comes after it formed partnerships with major telecom companies like Jio and Bharti Airtel. These collaborations are expected to help Starlink roll out its services faster and more effectively.
However, challenges remain. Discussions around how spectrum (radio frequencies used for internet transmission) will be allocated and priced are still ongoing. Elon Musk has reportedly had disagreements with Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Jio, over these issues.
At the same time, Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, is also preparing to enter the Indian market, showing his growing interest in expanding business in the region.
