Prior to the World Test Championship (WTC) final between the two teams in June, India interrupted Australia’s 15-month run as the top test team in cricket on Tuesday. The results from the 2019–20 season have been removed from the official rankings, which now only include series that have been completed after May 2020. Australia slipped to 116 points after their victories over Pakistan and New Zealand in 2019–20 was excluded and their weighting in the annual exercise for their 4-0 Ashes victory over England was cut in half.
With 114 points, England, led by captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, is still in third place. England has won 10 of its previous 12 tests. As a result, India’s 2019–20 2-0 defeat in New Zealand was no longer taken into account, propelling Rohit Sharma’s squad to the top of the list with 121 points. India is now placed first in T20 competition, ahead of reigning champions England. On June 7, India and Australia square off at the Oval in the World Tennis Championship final.
