Japan smashes the fastest internet speed record at 319 Terabits per second.

Engineers in Japan have broken a new world record for the highest internet speed, attaining 319 terabits per second (Tb/s) of data transfer.

At the International Conference on Fiber Optic Communication 2021, researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology revealed the results of their experiment.

NASA, the US space agency, operates at a speed of only 400 Gb/s. In comparison, the average household internet connection speed is 10 Gb/s.

According to media reports, the new speed, which was accomplished over 3,001 kilometres using 4-core optical fibre, beats the previous record of 178 Tb/s set less than a year ago and is seven times faster than the previous record of 44.2 Tb/s set by an experimental photonic circuit.
