British film producer Jemima Goldsmith, the ex-wife of former prime minister and chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, responded on Twitter to the Supreme Court’s decision to release him.
The post from Goldsmith, who resides in the UK with her sons, read: “Finally sense has prevailed.”
She also included the Pakistani flag and an emoji for a high five.
On Tuesday, Rangers officers operating under a warrant from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) detained Khan from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) grounds in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case.
The IHC later deemed Khan’s arrest to be “legal” after taking notice of it. The PTI then filed a request with the Supreme Court for the release of their chairman.
Khan’s arrest was deemed “illegal” by the highest court, which also ordered his immediate release on Thursday.
The NAB is investigating the former prime minister, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders over a deal the PTI government made with a real estate mogul that reportedly cost the national exchequer 190 million pounds.
Khan and the other defendants are accused of adjusting Rs50 billion, or 190 million pounds at the time, that was provided to the government by the British National Crime Agency (NCA).
Additionally, they are charged with receiving illegal benefits in the form of more than 458 kanals of land in Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, for the construction of Al Qadir University.
When Khan showed up for hearings on his bail petitions in other instances, he was taken into custody from the IHC. After his arrest, violent protests broke out all around the nation, causing at least eight fatalities and extensive infrastructure damage.
