Karachi University to consider 4-year BS instead of a 2-year degree

According to the sources, Karachi university is planning to mull a 4-year BS instead of a 2-year degree. The decision will come into apply on the endorsement of the affiliation board in degree colleges.

After the Higher Education Commission ended two-year degree programs, they suggested this in a report released by a committee formed by the university’s academic board.

The legal team, supervised by Supreme Court lawyer Shoaib M Ashraf, offered its opinions to a five-member committee which was led by Professor Jamil Kazmi, and included Professors Anila Akbar Malik, Nasiruddin Khan, Zaheer Qasmi, and Naeem Khalid.

As per the officials, The HEC committee clarified that if KU continued its 2 year’s program, HEC will not further recognize their degree, as per their rules.

In reply to the University, the team said that they are not in a position to challenge the applicable court’s decision to substitute the two-year graduations with four-year degree programs in colleges. KU cannot file a constitutional petition in the top courts.

Considering the legal advice, the committee has reported to the university’s registrar’s office, that was signed by all members and college representatives and proposed the conversion of all 16-year master’s programs into 16-year bachelor’s programs. Now the decision will come into action after obtaining the consent of the affiliation commission in degree colleges.

The report also stated that departments should start separate discipline colleges for two-year associate degree programs in contemplation of market needs.

The VC further stated that the affiliation board of Karachi University has given affiliation to degree colleges for two-year graduation. But if 16-year master’s programs are to be transformed into 16-year bachelor’s programs; a new affiliation procedure will have to take place. He said, in that situation, the colleges will need an affiliation with a two-year associate degree and a four-year graduation program, for which the affiliation board will once again examine the academic and physical structure of the colleges.
