KP Set Up Rs. 50 Million Fund for Transgender Community

According to the details, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has passed a bill in the provincial assembly to establish an endowment fund of Fifty million for the welfare of the transgender community in the province.

The bill was tabled by Anwar Zeb Khan, Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education, during Monday’s session chaired by Vice President Mahmood, Jan, to be incorporated with an initial capital of Rs. 50 million.

He said, “The fund may be credited from time to time with government grants, grants from philanthropists, non-governmental organizations and other organizations working for the well-being of transgender people”.

Transgender people are considered one of the most vulnerable sections of society. They are the most discriminated community in all walks of life. More than 70 transgender people have been killed in KP since 2015.

Transgender activists say there are 40,000-50,000 transgender people in the province.

Regardless, the 2017 general census put the number at only about 1,000.
