Muntazir Mehdi, Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), has indicated that instead of fining traffic violators, proceedings will be filed for tampering with number plates, including the placement of counterfeit, phoney, and illegal green number plates.
As a result, cases will be filed under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 97A, which states that individuals who tamper with number plates face up to two years in prison and a Rs. 200,000 fine, while those who make them face up to a year in prison and a Rs. 100,000 fine.
According to the CTO, the absence of number plates is unacceptable, however all cars with standard-pattern number plates will be excused.
In Lahore, a few car owners continue to flout the Excise Department’s lawful number plates. One reason for this is that the majority of vehicle owners who registered their new vehicles or motorcycles in 2021 or later have yet to get their original number plates from the Excise Department due to a technical problem.
