The Lahore High Court (LHC) has made a ruling stating that the Punjab interim government does not have the authority to transfer approximately 1 million acres of state land to the Pakistan Army for corporate agriculture farming. According to the court’s decision, released on Wednesday, the caretaker government of Punjab and the armed forces of Pakistan do not have the legal power to engage in corporate farming.
Justice Abid Hussain Chattha, the single-judge bench, ordered that any land given to the military for corporate farming should be returned to the Punjab government. The court also emphasized the need to educate members of the armed forces about their constitutional and legal obligations and the potential consequences of any violations.
The judgment will be shared with the federal government, ministry of defense, chief of army staff, chief of navy staff, and chief of air staff. Rafay Alam, the petitioner’s lawyer, hailed the verdict as a significant triumph for democracy and those who uphold the rule of law.
