Lionel Messi, the World Cup champion, was honoured by FIFA as the best male soccer player in 2022 on Monday at a ceremony in Paris. Alex Morgan, a prominent player for the American women’s national team, came in second place to Alexia Putellas of Spain for the 2022 prize for women.
Messi has now won the men’s award twice (for the first time since 2019), while Putellas has now won the women’s award twice in a row.
Messi, who has probably been the game’s greatest player ever, eventually captured his first World Cup, leading Argentina to its first international championship since 1986. Messi made a record-tying sixth appearance in the World Cup in 2022.
