Manual Sewer Cleaning Must End in Pakistan: Human Rights Commission

Manual sewer cleaning in Pakistan is receiving strong criticism after the National Commission for Human Rights called on the Federal Constitutional Court to introduce a complete nationwide ban on this dangerous practice.

The commission explained that sanitation workers face extremely high risks every time they enter a sewer. Many of them work without proper safety equipment, protective suits, or training. Because of this, they are exposed to poisonous gases and life-threatening conditions that can cause serious injuries or even death.

The court took notice of the issue after learning that another worker had passed away in Sindh just one day earlier. This incident added to growing concerns about worker safety and the urgent need for safer, modern methods of sewer cleaning.

The decision now rests with the court, and many hope it will lead to improved protection, better equipment, and safer working conditions for sanitation workers across the country.
