A Pakistani-American college student at DePaul University, Bushra Amiwala is the youngest Muslim elected official as of 2020 in the United States.
Decades ago, when Bushra Amiwala’s parents migrated from Karachi, Pakistan, to the United States to start a new life, little would they have thought that one day their daughter would end up becoming the country’s youngest Muslim public servant, and a role model for Muslim girls and women of colour.
Bushra Amiwala, the youngest Muslim elected official in the United States of America, is championing young voices in politics.
Amiwala’s campaign won recognition from TIME Magazine, Teen Vogue and The New York Times for its first run while in college.
She says she has learned to tolerate disappointment over the years and continues to inspire herself after seeing how far she has come, urging other young women to “remain positive and well-intentioned, and to dream big and strive for greatness. When you look ahead, it’s easier to keep going.”
