On Tuesday, Karachi residents noticed a sun halo reflecting weather variations. A 22-degree halo, also known as a sun halo, is caused by sunlight reflecting off of the millions of hexagonal ice crystals hanging in the atmosphere, according to the meteorological expert.
The news claims that cirrus clouds, which are tiny, unattached clouds that resemble hair, specifically form circular halos. It should be noted that these clouds are located over 2,000 feet up in the atmosphere.
What is the cause of the sun’s halo?
A knowledge-sharing website called Atmospheric Optics, situated in the UK, claims that the halo phenomenon occurs when light is reflected and refracted by ice crystals and may break into different colours due to dispersion.
According to reports, halo typically signals the arrival of rain within the following 24 hours since the cirrostratus clouds that create them can signal a frontal system. The planet saw its first solar eclipse of 2023 earlier this month. Eclipses happen when the moon, sun, and earth line up in a unique cosmic configuration, casting a shadow or obstructing the sun.
April has been designated as “Global Astronomy Month” by a US-based organisation Astronomers Without Borders, as the month will offer mesmerising sights in the sky, as per the report by Popular Science.
