Mr. Gohar Rehman, President of the Portugal-Pakistan Business Council, is spearheading a European delegation’s visit to Pakistan with the aim of enhancing bilateral trade and investment. The delegation’s visit focuses on strengthening cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy, information technology, textiles, agriculture, and tourism, all areas identified for significant growth potential.
The visit comes on the heels of the Third Round of Bilateral Political Consultations held in Lisbon, where both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic ties. Currently, Pakistan enjoys a favorable trade balance with Portugal, exporting rice, textiles, leather garments, and surgical instruments, while imports from Portugal stand at approximately $35 million. The visit is expected to foster more trade and open new investment opportunities.
During the visit, the delegation is engaging with government officials, business leaders, and representatives from institutions such as the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI). Discussions are centered on collaboration, joint ventures, and creating pathways for sustainable economic growth.
A pivotal moment of the visit is the inauguration of the Pakistan Chapter of the Portugal-Pakistan Business Council, which will establish a permanent connection between the two countries’ business communities. This chapter will focus on facilitating dialogue, supporting investment, and easing regulatory processes, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Mr. Rehman emphasized that the visit is aimed at fostering long-term relationships, rather than just short-term trade deals. He highlighted Pakistan’s young workforce, competitive industries, and burgeoning digital economy as areas with considerable potential for European investors.
The delegation includes representatives from various sectors, such as clean energy, industrial automation, textiles, and food processing, underscoring the wide range of collaboration opportunities. This visit marks a significant step in strengthening Pakistan-Europe economic relations and creating new opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity.
