NADRA has introduced major updates to the rules for CNICs, B-Forms and Family Registration Certificates (FRCs) to modernize the national identity system and stop the misuse of identity documents.
Acting on the directions of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, NADRA developed a new plan which was approved by the federal cabinet. These changes are now being put into effect to improve transparency and stop issues like fake registrations and child trafficking.
One of the key changes is that a birth certificate from the Union Council will now be required before a child can get a B-Form. Children under 3 will not need to give fingerprints or photos.
Children aged 3 to 10 will now have to provide a photo and go through an IRIS scan. From age 10 to 18, biometric data, IRIS scans, and photos will all be necessary.
Every child will receive a separate B-Form with a fixed expiry date. Although current B-Forms will remain valid, a new one will be needed to apply for a passport.
The FRC has now been made a legal document. Citizens must sign a declaration confirming that the information is correct.
People can apply for the FRC based on NADRA’s database. All family members must be listed, including those not registered before. Men with more than one wife must add details of all spouses and children.
Women can now choose to show either their father’s or husband’s name on their CNIC. CNIC-related decisions like cancellation or renewal must now be completed within 30 days.
NADRA has also added smart card features to regular ID cards. These will now include Urdu and English details, a QR code, and will be available faster and at a lower cost without any extra charges. These reforms aim to make the identity system more secure, reliable and easier for the public to access.
