NADRA to Replace Fingerprint Verification with Facial Recognition System

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is preparing to replace fingerprint verification with a modern facial recognition system across Pakistan.

The move aims to make identity verification faster, more accurate, and fully contactless, improving public access to essential services.

For years, fingerprint verification has caused problems for many citizens, especially elderly people and manual workers whose fingerprints are often worn or unclear. These issues have led to frequent mismatches and service delays.

The new facial recognition system is expected to solve these challenges by using advanced technology to identify individuals through facial features.

According to officials, the upgrade will be introduced across key services, including CNIC issuance, passport verification, banking transactions, and government welfare programs. By reducing verification failures, the system will help citizens complete their work more smoothly at NADRA offices and other service points.

The facial recognition system will also strengthen national security and fraud prevention. Real time verification and improved data accuracy will make it harder for identity fraud and impersonation to take place. Experts believe this will increase public trust in Pakistan’s national identity system.

Technology analysts say the shift reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on e-governance and digital inclusion. Many countries around the world are moving toward facial recognition and next generation biometric solutions to improve efficiency and security. NADRA’s decision aligns Pakistan with global best practices in identity management.

Officials have assured that data protection and privacy will remain a priority during the transition. With careful implementation, the new system is expected to modernize service delivery and make identity verification more reliable for millions of citizens across the country.
