NASA has achieved a significant milestone in its Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment by receiving a signal from a spacecraft 10 million miles away using a distant laser.
The experiment is testing the use of optical communications through lasers, aiming to improve data rates by up to 100 times compared to traditional radio signals.
The successful test took place on NASA’s Psyche mission, which is en route to study a distant asteroid.
The laser technology could enhance communication capabilities for future missions, including sending humans to Mars.
