Nation of Generosity! Pakistan Gives Over $2 Billion in Zakat Annually

Pakistanis are known for their generosity when it comes to charity. Many charitable organizations in the country depend entirely on donations from the public.

A recent survey found that in 2024, around 50 million Pakistanis donated a total of Rs619 billion ($2.19 billion) in Zakat. This highlights the strong culture of giving in the country.

The survey was conducted in 2024 using computer-assisted telephone interviews. It was a joint effort by the International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). According to the findings, the average Zakat donation during this period was about Rs15,000 per person.

Zakat is an important part of Islamic teachings, requiring Muslims to give a portion of their wealth to those in need. In Pakistan, Zakat plays a crucial role in supporting poor families, funding hospitals, running orphanages, and helping students with education expenses.

The large amount of Zakat collected in 2024 shows how committed people are to helping others. Despite economic challenges, Pakistanis continue to donate generously. This spirit of giving helps millions of people every year by providing food, healthcare, and financial support.

Surveys like this help in understanding donation trends and ensuring that funds reach the right people. They also highlight the importance of strengthening systems for collecting and distributing Zakat more effectively.

As donations continue to rise, organizations can use this information to improve their charity programs. This will help ensure that more people benefit from Zakat and that funds are used in the best possible way.
