New Pakistani Passports to Include Mother’s Name Alongside Father’s for the First Time

Pakistan has introduced a major update to its passport system for the first time, the mother’s name will now appear alongside the father’s name.

This new feature, announced by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P), is being praised as a progressive step toward inclusion and equality in national identification.

The decision aims to give recognition to both parents and reflects changing social values in Pakistan. Officials said the move will help modernize the country’s documentation process and make it more aligned with international standards. It also represents a symbolic shift toward gender balance in official records.

In addition to this change, the government has redesigned the passport with a fresh look and advanced security features to prevent forgery and misuse.

The updated design includes images of famous historical landmarks from across Pakistan, celebrating the country’s culture and heritage.

The new passports will also come with a revised fee structure, offering different page options and processing speeds to make the service more flexible for travelers. Citizens will be able to choose between regular and urgent processing depending on their travel needs.

Officials at the DGI&P said that the new initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade travel documents and improve the overall user experience.

By adding the mother’s name and enhancing design and security, Pakistan is taking a modern and inclusive approach to identity representation — one that acknowledges the equal role of both parents in every citizen’s life.
