Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has reported a significant oil and gas discovery at its Baragzai X-01 exploratory well in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The well is part of the Nashpa Exploration License, where OGDCL holds a 65% working interest, along with Pakistan Petroleum Limited with 30%, and Government Holdings Private Limited with 5%.
According to initial test results, the well produced around 3,765 barrels of oil per day and 11.2 million cubic feet of gas per day during a drill stem test. These flow rates indicate strong commercial potential and confirm the presence of hydrocarbons in the targeted formations.
The well was spudded in December 2024 and tested multiple geological formations, including Lockhart, Kingriali, Datta, and Samana Suk. Successful testing across these layers has increased confidence in the area’s resource potential.
Energy experts say this discovery is important for Pakistan, which relies heavily on imported oil and gas to meet its energy needs. Increasing local production can help reduce the import bill and improve energy security. It may also support electricity generation and industrial activity.
OGDCL stated that further evaluation and development plans will follow to bring the discovery into regular production. If developed efficiently, the field could add to the country’s proven reserves and strengthen the domestic energy sector in the coming years.
