Once Again! India Released Large Amount of Water into Chenab River

During the ongoing winter season, fresh concerns have appeared in Pakistan regarding what officials are calling a new form of “water war” by India. Authorities in Pakistan claim that India has once again changed the water flow coming into Pakistan, creating worry in areas that depend on river water.

In the first phase of this situation, a large and sudden increase of water was released into the Chenab River at Head Marala. According to officials, this surge was unexpected and created confusion.

They said that during the night between December 7 and 8, 2025, the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi released nearly 58,000 cusecs of water toward Pakistan. This huge amount of water flowed into the river within a short time, raising river levels and generating strong reactions from local authorities.

However, only a few days later, Pakistan faced a completely different problem. By December 13, the water flow suddenly dropped to an extremely low level of about 870 cusecs.

Officials reported that this reduced flow continued for four straight days, lasting until December 17. During this time, the flow stayed between 870 and 1,000 cusecs only, which is considered dangerously low for the region.

Such rapid changes in water flow can create major risks. Large releases can cause flooding or damage, while sudden reductions can harm agriculture, drinking water supply, and river life. Pakistani authorities believe this pattern is intentional and part of a strategy by India to pressure Pakistan.

These developments have once again highlighted the long-standing water dispute between the two countries. Many experts are calling for discussions and diplomatic engagement to avoid further tension and protect the rights of people who rely on rivers for their livelihood.
